Upgrade Before July 1, 2023

Google Analytics 4 (GA4) Integration

Google Analytics 4 is here and all eCommerce stores and websites will be required to upgrade to this new version by July 1, 2023.  If you’re a new store owner and creating a Google Analytics account for the first time, you’ll be set up using version 4, but for existing users action is required.

The latest version of Google Analytics:

  • Collects both website and app data to better understand the customer journey
  • Uses events instead of session-based data
  • Includes privacy controls such as cookieless measurement, and behavioral and conversion modeling
  • Has predictive capabilities to offer guidance without complex models
  • Integrates directly to media platforms help drive actions

If you’re on BigCommerce or Shopify, both platforms use the Universal Analytics (UA) property. A Google Analytics 4 (GA4) property can be set up to run alongside the UA property, giving you access to data and reports that include app metrics, granting a second layer of insight into your storefront. As Google Analytics 4 is not supported natively in BigCommerce or Shopify, additional steps will need to be taken in order to use Google Analytics 4.

Upgrading to GA4 must be done by July 1, 2023.  If not, On July 1, 2023, standard Universal Analytics properties will no longer process data. You’ll be able to see your Universal Analytics reports for a period of time after July 1, 2023. However, new data will only flow into Google Analytics 4 properties.

There are two options for store owners to upgrade to GA4:

Store owners with knowledge of Google Analytics and are comfortable with creating a new GA4 property and integrating it into the store’s backend can complete the process on their own or with the help of the platform’s support team.

For those who prefer to let the professionals handle it, Your Store Wizards can implement GA4 into your BigCommerce, Shopify, or Verizon Small Business Essentials store.  As part of this service, we will:

  • Create a new GA4 property in Google Analytics
  • Install new GA4 code and script into the backend of your store
  • Monitor data for one week following integration to verify accurate collection and reporting

The cost of this service is $129 per store.

Important note about Google Analytics and data collection.  Customers must accept cookies for analytics to work. If your site has a cookie banner and customers do not click “accept” or click “do not accept” data will not be collected or reported.  Additionally, if you hide a cookie banner site functionality will not be impacted but analytics will not run.
